The Invitation

The afternoon sun filtered through the wide windows of the lake house, casting golden rectangles across the hardwood floor. Maria leaned against the kitchen counter, a glass of iced tea in her hand, watching Sono curl up on the plush sofa with a book. The air was thick with the scent of pine and water, and the only sound was the gentle lapping of waves against the dock outside.
Maria set her glass down, her footsteps soft on the floor as she approached. She stopped beside the sofa, looking down at Sono. The younger woman’s dark hair fell across her face as she read, her lips slightly parted. Maria felt a familiar pull in her chest, the same one that had been building for months during their late-night gym sessions and stolen glances.
Maria: "You know, we've been here for hours, and you haven't once looked up from that book."
Sono started, marking her page with a finger. She looked up at Maria, her cheeks flushing a soft pink. "I didn't want to disturb you. You seemed busy."
Maria: "I'm never too busy for you." Maria's voice dropped, a teasing edge creeping in. She reached out, gently pushing a strand of hair behind Sono's ear. "Besides, I've been waiting for the right moment."
Sono’s breath hitched, her book lowering to her lap. "What moment?"
Maria didn't answer with words. Instead, she slid onto the sofa beside Sono, her thigh pressing against the younger woman’s. She could feel the heat radiating from Sono’s body, the slight tremor in her hands.
Maria: "This moment."
