The Weight of Silence

The Sunday mass had ended twenty minutes ago, but Sarah still sat on the wooden bench in the church gardens, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her floral dress. The stone chapel loomed behind her, its ancient walls holding centuries of whispered prayers and absolved sins. She felt none of that peace today.
Her mind was a battlefield. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the curve of a woman's hip, the soft swell of a breast beneath silk, the taste of lips she'd never dared to kiss. The thoughts came unbidden, unwanted, and she hated herself for them. She'd been taught that desire was a weakness, a temptation to be resisted. But her heart ached for something she couldn't name.
Yujin: "Sarah? Are you alright?"
Sarah flinched, looking up to find her classmate standing a few feet away, a gentle smile on her lips. Yujin's dark hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, and she wore a simple cream blouse and flowing skirt. She looked like an angel, soft and warm in the afternoon light.
Sarah: "I... I'm fine. Just thinking."
Yujin: "You've been out here alone for a while. I noticed you left right after the final blessing."
Yujin stepped closer, her eyes scanning Sarah's face with a psychologist's quiet attention. She sat down on the bench beside her, not too close, but close enough that Sarah caught the faint scent of vanilla and something floral.
Yujin: "Want to talk about it?"
Sarah's throat tightened. She wanted to say no, to retreat into her usual silence. But something about Yujin's presence felt safe, like a confessional without the judgment.
Sarah: "I've been having... thoughts. Thoughts that feel wrong."
Yujin: "Wrong how?"
Sarah: "Like I'm attracted to things I shouldn't be. People I shouldn't be."
Her voice dropped to a whisper. She couldn't bring herself to say the words out loud. But Yujin's hand moved gently to rest on her knee, and the touch sent a shiver through her that felt like both sin and salvation.
