The First Spark

The open-plan office hummed with the low murmur of keyboards and distant phone calls. Yujin sat three rows ahead, her auburn hair tied in a loose ponytail, her screen reflecting the spreadsheet she was supposed to be updating. From across the floor, her phone buzzed on the desk. A text from Yujin: "I can see you staring. Like what you see?"
He glanced up. She wasn't looking at him, but he saw the curve of a smile on her lips as she typed again. "Don't answer. Just think about what I'd do if we were alone in the supply closet. Right now."
Across the office, near the break room, Sarah stood frozen by the coffee machine. She was quiet, always in long sleeves and modest skirts, but her eyes kept drifting toward the same desk. When she caught him looking, she blushed violently and hurried back to her cubicle, clutching her mug like a shield.
Later, by the elevators, Chloe leaned against the wall, her blonde hair falling over one shoulder, her blouse unbuttoned one more than regulation. She smiled, slow and deliberate. "You know, the others feel it too. Yujin's been texting you all day. Sarah can barely breathe around you. And I've been watching them watch you."
She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "What if we didn't go home tonight? What if we stayed? I know which conference room has a lock."
