The Last Set

The gym's fluorescent lights hummed low, casting long shadows across the empty floor. Maria lay on the bench press, her chest rising and falling as she fought through the last rep. Her trainer, Jake, stood over her, his hands hovering just inches from the weights.
Jake: "One more. You've got it."
Maria's arms trembled, but she pushed, her body screaming. It rose slowly, then clanked back into the rack. She let out a shuddering breath, sweat beading on her forehead.
Maria: "Fuck… that was heavy."
Jake: "That's the point. You wanted to get stronger, right?"
He offered a hand, and she took it, her fingers lingering against his palm a moment longer than necessary. The gym was theirs now—no one else had stayed. The air felt thick, charged.
Maria: "You always push me harder than anyone else."
Jake: "Because you can take it."
She sat up, her legs dangling off the bench, her face close to his. The dim light caught the sheen on her skin, her sports bra soaked through.
Maria: "Is that all you think I can take?"
He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he stepped closer, his voice low.
Jake: "I think you're capable of a lot more than you show."
Her lips curved into a slow smile. The tension between them was a palpable thing, a rubber band about to snap. She reached out, her fingers brushing the damp fabric of his shirt.
Maria: "Prove it."
